Our Sedation Dentistry Services

Dr. Strahler and our team provide expert care. We have a variety of sedation options available. The right choice may depend on your procedure, your budget, your schedule, and more, so we can work with you to choose the best option for your situation.

Laughing Gas (Nitrous Oxide)

Laughing gas is a great choice for simple procedures, or if you don’t want a deeper method of sedation. It’s delivered through a comfortable nose mask. When you breathe in the nitrous oxide, you’ll feel calm, comfortable, and a bit disconnected from what’s happening around you. However, you’ll still be fully conscious, aware, and able to respond to commands.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is a good option for patients who want a deeper level of sedation. In this type of sedation, you’ll take a sedative pill that will make you feel drowsy, groggy, and relaxed. You may even fall asleep and/or forget most of what happened during your procedure. However, you won’t be unconscious, and you can still respond to commands and be woken up, if necessary.

IV Sedation

IV sedation uses a similar type of medication as oral conscious sedation. But instead of a pill, it is delivered into your veins through an IV. This means that IV sedation is usually deeper than oral conscious sedation, and it takes effect more quickly. This makes it a good choice for oral surgeries and other more invasive dental procedures.

FAQ

How Long Does It Take For Sedation To Wear Off?

This depends on the type of sedation you get at our office. Nitrous oxide wears off after about 5 minutes, and has pretty minimal after-effects. However, oral conscious sedation and IV sedation can take up to 4-6 hours or longer to completely wear off. These types of sedation also have longer and more intense after-effects.

Can I Drive Myself Home After My Appointment?

Yes, as long as you choose laughing gas sedation. Since it wears off so fast, it’s safe to drive to and from Strahler Dental Partners after your appointment. However, you can’t do this if you get oral conscious sedation or IV sedation. These types of sedation can impair your motor skills for hours, so you’ll need a responsible adult to bring you to and from our office. If you don’t have someone with you to drive you home and take care of you, we may recommend against oral conscious sedation or IV sedation.

Does Sedation Dentistry Relieve Pain?

Sedation dentistry keeps you feeling calm and relaxed. Along with local numbing of the treatment area, this eliminates feelings of pain and discomfort. Your procedure at Strahler Dental Partners will be completely pain-free.
