What Can I Eat After Dental Implant Surgery?

One of the first things you will feel after dental implant surgery will be hunger. You will have to abstain from eating for about six hours before the procedure so naturally, the hunger pangs will hit soon.

But, to make sure that the implant site is healing properly, you will need to be careful about your diet for about one or two weeks.

So, here's what you can eat after dental implant surgery and other tips that will help you heal faster.

Easy Foods to Eat After Dental Implant Surgery

As a general rule, it's important to stay away from hard, crunchy, and chewy foods for about one or two weeks after implant surgery.

Immediately after the surgery, you should eat liquids or very soft foods to avoid injuring your mouth or straining yourself. Opt for foods such as cream soups, broth, smoothies, yogurt, mashed potatoes, or cottage cheese.

Continue with a soft-food diet in the next few days too. You can eat oatmeal, soft fruits like berries, peaches, pears, bananas, and eggs.

You can also eat ice cream as the cold can help with the swelling and discomfort you may feel after the surgery.

Tips for Healing After Dental Implant Surgery

In addition to being careful about what you eat, you can also try these tips to speed up your recovery:

Rest

While not really a major surgery, getting a dental implant can still put a strain on your body. So, you should try to take it easy for a few days and focus on resting to allow your body to heal. Take a few days off if possible, don't exercise, and avoid any heavy exertion like moving heavy boxes.

Drink Plenty of Water

Keep your body hydrated to help it heal faster. Try to drink at least eight glasses of water every day.

Eat Nutritious Meals

You may feel some pain and discomfort in the first days after the implant surgery and be tempted to skip a few meals because of it. But, it's important to nourish your body to help it heal faster.

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

About 24 hours after the surgery you can start rinsing your mouth with salt water to remove any food particles. You can also start brushing your teeth, but try to avoid the implant site.

When Can I Start Eating Normal Food?

As we said, you should stick to a soft foods diet for about two weeks after implant surgery. After this period, you can slowly start some more filling foods, such as meats, pasta, and raw veggies.
